How Laser Tattoo Removal Works

Laser is the best treatment for tattoo removal as it has the ability to remove the tattoo pigment completely without leaving any scarring. Our clinic uses the Q-Switch, Nd:YAG Bodilase system which can remove tattoos containing all colour inks with two different lenses.
Tattoo ink is removed by using a specific wavelength which passes through the skin but is absorbed by the ink from the laser gun.
The rapid absorption of light energy causes destruction of the tattoo ink, and it is removed by the body’s natural filtering systems. Slight scabbing will occur during healing process.

Bodilase Information

The Q-Switched, Nd:YAG laser emits light in very short flashes which only targets the tattoo ink. It does not affect any other area of the skin. You will feel slight stinging, but an anethsetic cream can be applied prior to treatments. There is no down time for this procedure. On average, professional tattoos require 2 – 6 treatments about 4 – 6 weeks apart for healing.
The number of treatments depends on the age of tattoo, the amount and type of ink used as well as the depth of the ink in the skin.

Do all colours of ink disappear equally as well?
No. Dark (blue/black) inks and red inks fade the best. Oranges and purples usually respond well.  Green and yellow inks are the most difficult to remove, although additional treatments can produce significant fading.

Post Tattoo Removal

After the procedure the area may be red or swollen, as if mildly sunburned. There may be some bruising, and with deeper tattoos slight bleeding is not uncommon.  Pinpoint bleeding and frosting of colour is associated with the treatment. An antibacterial ointment and a dressing will be applied to the area. Keep the area clean and dry after treatments
A shower can be taken but you must keep the skin clean and dry for 5-7 seven days and the treated area should not be scrubbed.  Redness, sensitivity or even blistering may occur. There may be discolouration and a change in skin texture in the area, which will gradually improve.
You may not notice significant results until several treatments have been completed. Most people are satisfied with the pigment removal achieved through laser treatment. It is important to remember, however, that your skin will never look as it did before you had the tattoo, even though the tattooed pigment has been removed.
